The main entrance to Dalt Vila is the Portal de la Mar or Ses Taules, named after the wooden planks that formed the drawbridge. Although many are unaware of this fact, the walls that are currently preserved in Dalt Vila are not the work of the Phoenicians. The walls are quite an engineering feat, designed to adapt to the challenging terrain. The bastions were built after the Christian conquest.

The urban layout of Dalt Vila has remained almost unchanged for centuries.

Once we pass through the entrance portal to Dalt Vila, our journey begins through a labyrinth of winding streets filled with beautiful corners. The scheme and distribution of this urban layout have remained almost intact for centuries.

After a period of decline following the fall of the Roman Empire, the Muslims annexed the city to the Caliphate of Córdoba. The city was named Madina Yabisa, a name that the interpretation center located in the city receives.

Following the Christian conquest, some of the streets in the Citadel underwent changes. For instance, near Calle Mayor, we can see some of the stately homes built by the nobles of that era. In many of the facades, we can observe how large ornamented windows allow the sunlight to filter through.”

The Cathedral of Ibiza

At the top of the hill, we find the Cathedral of Santa Maria, known for the trapezoidal shape of its bell tower.

Visiting this citadel is very pleasant at any time of the year. If you visit the city in the summer, a sunset stroll is the ideal moment. Later, you can have dinner at a typical Ibiza restaurant and end the night with a walk through the streets full of artisan shops.

A must-visit is the castle, to admire the views from its impressive bastions and walls.

An ideal journey to end the day, before immersing yourself in the long night of partying and nightlife. On the other hand, if you visit the island in autumn or winter, a walk through the cobbled streets will be more enjoyable at noon before lunch. A good plan to take a break and enjoy Ibiza’s cuisine, ending the afternoon watching the sunset over Ibiza from the highest point of the city.”
